Follow our video series showcasing three decades of impact!

This series highlights how Positive Futures have been a force for change, enabling real choice and control for the people we support and their families. From pioneering person-centred care to bringing Shared Lives Services across Ireland; we’ve never believed in simply maintaining services; we ask whats missing and how we can fill that gap!

Agnes, our Chief Executive, reflects on 30 years of transforming lives

What kind of life could you build – if the world had already decided your future for you?

For so many people with a learning disability, autism or acquired brain injury, the answer used to be heartbreakingly limited. A place in a group home. A seat at a day centre. Maybe a hospital bed. A life built around other people’s decisions – not your own.

That was the reality I wanted to change when, thirty years ago, I helped start Positive Futures. As we mark our 30th anniversary, I’ve been thinking about where it all began, the progress we’ve made, and the work that still lies ahead.

How we kicked off our 30 year celebrations…

Our 30-year celebrations began on 2 October 2025 with a special event at the Canal Court Hotel in Newry. People we support, their families and staff past and present were joined by Councillor Philip Campbell, (Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council), alongside representatives from Health Trusts from across NI and our partner organisations.

The event was co-hosted by Patrick McKinney, one of the people we support in our Sperrin Supported Living service, alongside Linda McCauley, renowned broadcaster. Guests were treated to a series of onstage interviews with people we support and their families by Helen Mark, MBE, our Honorary Vice-President.  There was not a dry eye in the room as they shared powerful reflections on the positive impact Positive Futures has had on their lives.

Guests also enjoyed a video message from Health Minister Mike Nesbitt recognising Positive Future’s 30 years of impact.
